Sierra Vista Farmers Markets
Growing Together Since 2005
Rain or Shine – –
We all love our beautiful Arizona weather, but the past couple of weeks at the market have dealt us an inclement hand. Nevertheless, the soggy weather didn’t prevent our hearty vendors and customers from coming out and making the best of it. We appreciate all of you, who stopped by to pick up fresh produce, eggs, meats, baked goods, salsa, lasagna, a free Sierra Vista Herald , and the many other products you have come to depend upon every week. Thank you for shopping locally and supporting the economy of our community.
If the weather forecast is more accurate than it was last week we should have a mix of clouds and sunshine. Right now it doesn’t look like any precipitation is in the forecast for Thursday.
SNAP and Double-Up
Speaking of dependable, we are sorry to keep turning away our SNAP and Double-Up customers, but since the government shut-down we have not been able to get our new machine set up. As soon as we know more we will let you know.
Fun Gardening Tip – Growing Citrus in Cochise County
For those of you always trying to grow new things. Did you know you can grow citrus in Cochise County? We were skeptical at first, too, but it’s been six years now and our citrus trees are doing really well. Now there are a few things you need to know when you are just getting started. You’ll need to wrap the trees with “Christmas lights” during the winter season. Make sure they are not the LED variety ,because they don’t give off much warmth. In any case, just wrap several strands of lights around your trees and then cover them with agricultural cloth. In a pinch you can throw a sheet or blanket over the trees when it gets really cold but just don’t leave it on for too long or your tree will starve for light.
After four or five years the trees become somewhat acclimated and even in a real cold snap you might loose the leaves but the tree will send out new leaves when it gets warm. We’ve found that Lemons, Limes, and Grapefruit are the most sensitive to the cold. Mandarins and mandarin-quats are the least sensitive. Also, make sure you plant the trees in a location where they are protected from wind and wind-chill. That will help them make it through the winter.
This Week At the Market
Agricultural and Produce Vendors Spotlight
Zarpara Vineyard of Willcox Arizona
Award winning Zarpara Vineyard will be at the market this week with four wines. They’ll be introducing, for the first time, their newly released 2015 Origen, a red blend of Syrah and Monastrell. Of note for the wine connoisseur, this wine just received a silver medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. In addition to their award winning 2015 Origen, they will have also their Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp dry white and two additional reds: Monastrell and Sangiovese.
Simmons Honey Ranchito
This week the Simmons have a real treat for honey lovers – Creamed Honey. This delicious treat uses their whitest honey – whipped into a creamy spread. They will have chicken eggs as well as the wide variety of honey products, jams, jellies, and toothsome delicacies.
Emu Enterprise
How would you like to crack one egg and get the equivalent of 5-6 chicken eggs? Well, this week is your chance. Emu Enterprises will have emu eggs this week at the market. These heart healthy eggs are low in cholesterol and really rich.
Fun Fact: Emus are the second largest birds in the world after the ostrich. Native to Australia, they are members of the ratite family, a group of birds that can’t fly. Not only are their eggs size immense, but their stunning emerald color makes them one of the most striking eggs on earth.
Artisans, Craft, and Body Care Vendor’s Spotlight
Tawin
Tawin will have her handmade minions, unicorns, and pikachus. If plants and greens are more your speed, she’ll also have some of her plants and succulents for the year-round gardeners.
This Week’s Market Music
This week the Simmons family will entertain us with their beautiful voices and eclectic variety of music.
We hope to see you all at the Market this week!
