The Rolled Up Pizza – –
In 1950, just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the small town of Essington the Italian restaurateur Nazzareno Ramono was inspired to experiment with his menu. Taking his  stuffed pizza (pizza imbottito) he added cheese, peppers, salami, and ham and as a finishing touch he rolled it up. This new rendition of the pizza would go on to become a classic Italian American fare – all it needed was a snazzy name.

About the same time Nazzereno was experimenting with his pizza imbottito, Ingrid Bergman and Mario Vitale were starring in the Italian neorealism classic, Stromboli: Terra Di Dio .  Nazzereno’s future brother in-law suggested they name his new Italian dish after the movie.  And that is how the Stromboli got its name, or so the story goes. Oh, and in case you are wondering, Stromboli is derived from the Greek Strongulos which means “round”.

So now that you know the supposed history of the Stromboli, might I suggest you stop by Thursday’s Farmers Market and try one of these rolled-up cheesy quasi-pizza delights. You can even get one frozen to take home and eat while you watch a good movie…  Stromboli, anyone?

Welcome to Our First New Backyard Gardener
This week we are pleased to welcome our first new Backyard Gardener. George Schneider from McNeal will be bringing unshelled pecans from his small orchard. He’ll be set up with Sivonn at the information booth.  Be sure to stop by try some of his Pecans and give him a warm welcome.  Say hi to Sivonn while you are there, she’ll have her variety of greens, some mushrooms, and bean sprouts.

The Lettuce Man will be absent this week, so if you are looking for more greens, try Ruth’s Garden at the west end or Backyard Gardening and Growing.  Estrada Citrus will be at the market again this week with her sweet oranges and tangy grapefruit. Zarpara Vineyards will be back as well with their classic wines :
– Sauvignon Blanc – A crisp, dry white
– Sangiovese, which recently received 87 points from Wine Spectator
– Origen – A red blend
– Zinfandel – A robust red full of dark berries.

Gardening Tip – Planting your Onion Sets
It’s time to plant those onion sets. If you’ve ordered them be sure to stop by the market and pick them up.  Get them in the ground now and you’ll have full sized great looking onions by June or July. If you don’t get your onions from one of the knowledgeable vendors at the market be sure to order “short day” onions. They are what grow best in our area. If your onions are always immature or small it is likely because you don’t have the right type of onions.

Agricultural and Produce Vendors Spotlight

Arevalos Farms
This week Arevalos Farms will have kohlrabi and red Detroit beets. They also have mole tamales made from heritage corn from the region called “Sweet June”. With their shredded turkey served hot at the market or take home frozen, you are sure to satisfy those hungry mouths at your next meal. Freshly ground corn masa can also be purchased frozen. There are still some butternut squash available, but that winter squash season is quickly coming to an end.

Bakers and Food Vendor’s Spotlight

Dragon Fire Pizza
While you are at the market this week why don’t you try Dragon Fires – Neapolitan style pizza cooked in a wood fired, brick oven while you wait. You won’t get a better tasting or fresher pizza anywhere.

Stromboli and More
This week Celestial Breads will have their delicious all beef Stromboli baked with three cheeses and Chef Scotty’s mouth watering marinara sauce.  If Cinnamon Date Craisin Rolls, Honey Apple Breads, or Banana Walnut Bread is more to your taste you’ll find that too along with other equally tasty baked goods as well. For those of you wondering just what goes into one of Celestial Breads Stromboli here are their yummy ingredients:

*fresh herb pita with rosemary, thyme, oregano and basil…
*assorted all beef and turkey ingredients (turkey bacon, all beef pepperoni, seasoned ground beef)…
*Scotty’s delicious marinara sauce
*4 kinds of cheese, fresh shredded mozzarella, cheddar, Monterey jack, and parmesean
*Then rolled and baked with more cheese topping.

Ginny’s Eclectic Kitchen
Ginny makes fresh sourdough bread for you every week. But it is not only her baking that makes this sourdough so delicious. She has to “feed” her sourdough leavening starter every day to keep it “alive” and healthy. Ginny only uses unbleached, unbromated, unenriched wheat flour, so come and sample her bread or some of her scrumptious sweet treats.
