GROWING PUMPKINS FOR PIES & JACK-O-LANTERNS (reprinted in Herald/Review)

In Cochise County, plan to plant pumpkins around June 15^th for jack-o-lanterns at Halloween and pies for Thanksgiving.

There are many different varieties of pumpkins from mini white pumpkins to Atlantic Giant weighing over 2700 lbs. For nice size pie and jack-o-lanterns, Connecticut Field, Jack-o-lantern varieties are good. They are other cultivars that serve these purposes very well also. But do try to get them planted by the middle of June for Fall holidays.

• Mix into the soil several inches of rich organic matter or aged compost.
• Plant 2-3 seeds per hill to insure germination then snip out one, leaving only two in hills 3-5 feet apart in soil with 6 – 6.5 pH.
• Pumpkins need lots of water, so use drip irrigation or soaker hose to avoid wetting the leaves which encourages powdery mildew.
• Feed your pumpkins with a good general purpose vegetable or organic fertilizer every 7-10 days.
• As pumpkins set, put them on a board or bed of straw to keep them off the soil to prevent rotting.
• Allow not more than three pumpkins per vine to reduce stress on the plant. After three pumpkins have set on a vine, pinch out the fuzzy growing tip to limit the size of vines the roots need to support.
• While still green, etch children’s or grandchildren’s names into the skin of the pumpkins. Use a ball point pen to just break the skin. As the pumpkins enlarge the names will enlarge many times the original font size. When the pumpkins turn orange the names will be a brown scar. They get quite excited to see their names etched onto their own pumpkin.
• Harvest pumpkins once they reach their ideal color.
• Cut the stems a ways back from the pumpkins and they will store for many weeks. Short stem, or stemless pumpkins are poor keepers. Enjoy the holidays with fresh pumpkins.
