Sierra Vista Farmers Markets Update for 02-14-19
February 13, 2019 No Comments Sierra Vista Farmers Markets Update wstruse

Green is the Color of the Market this Week
One of the many things that makes the Sierra Vista Farmers Market so special is that we have fresh greens nearly all year long. In Arizona the best time for growing greens is in the winter when the cooler temperatures make for ideal growing conditions for lettuce, radishes, kale (curly & dino), Swiss chard, carrots, beets, kohlrabi, and spinach – just to name a few. By June the weather has warmed up a bit and the greens tend to get a bit of a bite to them, unless they are kept cool in a hooped garden or green house. Some of our vendors go to this extra work for you so during the summer months you’ll still be able to find delicious greens at our market. Look for greens at Ruth’s Garden, Arevalos Farms, The Lettuce Man, and Backyard Gardening and Growing.

Short day Onion Sets
For the next couple of weeks you’ll find onion sets at the Sierra Vista Farmers Market. These are the ideal onion starters for our area and you’ll be thrilled as you watch them grow into full size onions. (water, weeding, mulch, and fertilizer not included 🙂

Roasting the Bean
Did you know it only takes between 15 and 20 minutes to roast green coffee beans? Here’s the kicker though, the difference between light roast and the dark (French) roast is merely a matter of seconds. Our vendors Jesse and Jessica of Café Cultiva have mastered this roasting process and can tell, not only by time, but by the smell and sound of the bean when their desired roast is achieved. They say the first audible crack tells them they’ve got a light roast and by the second crack they know they are close to the dark roast. Their most popular beans are from Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica, and India (peaberry). If you like fresh roasted coffee, but don’t have a coffee grinder, Café Cultiva will grind it while you wait.

Lasagna and More
Chef Scotty will be at the market this week with his mouth watering Lasagna. A consistent favorite at the Sierra Vista Farmers Market, these ready made meals will delight your family for dinner tonight. If you are wondering what the “more” is in Lasagna & More you might also like one of Chef Scotty’s killer burritos. Scottie makes a two meat (beef/pork) burrito as well as a six vegetable vegan burrito.  Just a note, all of Chef Scotty’s burritos are lard free.

Artisans, Craft, and Body Care Vendor’s Spotlight

Fizzy Wonders
Have you heard of a lotion bar or moisture bar before? Come and take a look at Vanessa and Miguel’s booth at Fizzy Wonders. The lotion bar consists of all natural mango butter, coco butter, jojoba butter , and beeswax. You can choose from lavender, almond, or honey oat scented bars that can be used straight on your skin. For Valentine’s Day, they will have Valentine Gift boxes available, that contain a lip balm, two wash cloths, and two bath bombs. If you want to mix it up, ask about customizing your gift.

Simmons Honey Ranchito
Beeswax candles will be available at Simmons Honey Ranchito this week. The candles will be in very limited supply so please come by and see what they have.

Beeswax is a natural product made by the bee’s wax glands in their abdomens. It’s most commonly found during the time of year when honey production is heavy. The bees use this wax as the building material for their hexagonal patterned comb (the bee’s cabinetry).  The Simmons melt & clean the beeswax after the honey harvest using water and steam. Using no chemical bleaching process to clean the wax insures that the  wax has varying amounts of micro particles of pollen, honey, and other bee debris. At their booth they will also have their usual honey products, jams and jellies as well as                                                                                                                  relishes.
