Sierra Vista Farmers Markets Update for 03-14-19

Desert Salmon – –
If you are health conscious like many who shop for their produce and meat products at the Sierra Vista Farmers Markets, then you are probably always vigilant for new sources of healthful foods. One such food is salmon. In our part of the country most commercially available salmon comes from the Pacific Ocean. At the Sierra Vista Farmers Markets, Randy with White Cane Sockeye Salmon provides us desert dwellers with some of the best smoked Alaskan Sockeye salmon to be found in our part of the country. Randy also has fresh caught Alaskan king crab, halibut, and Ling Cod which he has flash frozen so Southern Arizona can savor some of Alaska’s finest seafood.

Health Benefits of Salmon
Did you know that Salmon is rich in protein, as well as a good source of Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, vitamin A, D, and some B vitamins?

It’s the Omega 3 fatty acids of Salmon though that really get this sea food its credentials as a healthful food.  According to health authorities, Omega-3 fatty acids helps reduce inflammation, a root cause (many scientists believe) of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Studies have also shown that people who regularly consume Omega-3 fatty acids found in food like salmon have better eye, cardiovascular, and cognitive health.

Sweet Treats
For those of you with a sweet tooth, one of our newest vendors, Deb Score of Sweet AZ, brings us a variety of handmade & prepackage toffee, brittle, and fudge. Deb tells us, that all of her sweet treats are gluten and soy free.  For more sweets don’t forget to stop by Donna at McDonald Farms; her lemon bars, caramel nut bars, scones, and (cherry, peach, & apple) hand-pies are sure to satisfy even the most discriminating dessert cravings. And if these purveyors of fine desserts are not what you are looking for, make sure you stop by Bodie’s Big Skye Bakery and try one of Winnie’s favorites – Mesquite Jubilee cookies. These toothsome delicacies are made with Arizona’s finest mesquite flour, craisins, chocolate chips, and walnuts.  Unfortunately, Bodie’s Mesquite Jubilee cookies are so good, they hardly ever make it home.

A Special Thanks from the CCYO
Winnie and I wanted to extend our thanks to the vendors who provided goods for this years recent Cochise County Youth Orchestra fundraiser. The fundraiser was a smashing success and the money raised will go a long way to helping young children participate in the arts in Cochise County. The following is a thank you note from the orchestra:

To our friends and musical supporters at Sierra Vista Farmers Market:

On behalf of the entire Cochise County Youth Orchestra, allow me to express my sincerest thanks for donating raffle items for our annual CCYO “Medley of Melodies” Benefit Concert and Fundraising Raffle, which took place on Saturday, February, 16, 2019. It was a great success! We appreciate your support of the CCYO, which helps us give children the opportunity to learn to play string instruments and to play in an orchestra setting.

As a non-profit organization, we appreciate your generosity which has kept our music program going since 2004.

With sincere thanks,

Betty Creegan, General Manger
